Artist Statement
My paintings are meditative, vibrant and translucent, process-based oils on canvas or linen. They are fuelled by my daily meditation practice, and fed by the natural energies of where I live and work: my studio overlooks the sea on the south east Cornwall coast. Recent paintings transmit change, transformation, moments out of time. They embody spiritual Energies and the Unseen, the immaterial, not the material world.
Through translucent layered oils, I express this energetic flow. Each painting is a palimpsest of experience; once the process of making has begun, each work takes on its own life. I never erase anything, thus the painting embodies the narrative of its own making. It is a process of concealment and revelation. I work on a number of paintings together; I am in a constant dialogue with each painting, and the paintings are in dialogue with each other.
In some ways I am always attempting to make visible the invisible, so I am continually re-creating the same painting. Since the sale of my first large work (from my 2002 degree show) to a consultant Psychiatrist, many of my paintings have found homes in therapeutic locations.
In 2003, five of my paintings were bought, through a gallery, for the new NHS Psychiatric unit at Bodmin in Cornwall. In 2007, Dame Stephanie Shirley selected a small painting of mine for the National ING Discerning Eye Exhibition in London; this is now part of her collection at Priors Court School (for autistic young adults).
A large work of mine is hanging in the St Luke’s Hospice in Plymouth, and a smaller piece in the Sue Ryder Hospice near Cheltenham. I also have work in an Osteopathy practice, an Acupuncture practice in Plymouth, and a Yoga Teaching room. Other work is in private collections through the UK and abroad.
